Thailand may launch tokenized securities trading system

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand is planning to launch a distributed ledger technology (DLT)-based trading platform for securities firms.

This move is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the capital market and expand digital asset trading amid increasing interest from institutional investors.

Strengthening the electronic securities ecosystem

Jomkwan Kongsakul, Deputy Secretary-General of the SEC, told reporters that the new platform will allow securities firms to trade digital tokens, contributing to the development of an electronic securities ecosystem that will improve the efficiency of bond trading, settlements, investor registration, and payment processes. Four digital token projects have already been approved for the SEC’s DLT-based debt securities trading system, while two more projects, focusing on green tokens and investment initiatives, are currently under review.

The system is designed to support multiple blockchains with interoperability standards, enabling a shared ledger for future cross-chain transactions. Under the proposed framework, two types of securities will be issued: tokenized traditional securities and digital securities based on blockchain technology.
